There are seven major cartels in Mexico that spread over the territory and are: The Juarez cartel, La Familia Michoacana and The Knights Templar, the Beltrán-Leyva Cartel, the Pacific or Sinaloa, Arellano Felix, Los Zetas and the Gulf Cartel.
These six groups, led by Heriberto Lazcano, alias "El Lazca" (Los Zetas) and Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman (Sinaloa cartel) are operating in a larger portion of the territory.

It is also known that control reaches Central American countries, such as Guatemala.

The area of operation of the Sinaloa cartel focuses on the Pacific coast of Mexico, with presence in states such as Chihuahua, Sonora, Sinaloa, Jalisco, Oaxaca, Chiapas and Quintana Roo. Despite having less territory than Los Zetas, the cartel led by "El Chapo" is considered as the most powerful and cohesive of all organization.
